Help: Search Letters

You can use the Search Letters page to restrict your search to Schiller's letters.

From the Search Letters page you can use the Upper Toolbar to open a context-sensitive Help page or to clear the Search form. You can also use the Right-Hand Toolbar to start a new search, to switch to a different Search page, to consult general information about Schillers Werke or to access the top-level Table of Contents page. You can access the Search Letters page by clicking the Letters icon on the Right-Hand Toolbar. Alternatively, if your last search was a Letters search, you can click the Refine Search icon on the Upper Toolbar of a page and you will be taken to the Search Letters page (your original search terms will be preserved in the Search form); or you can start a fresh search by clicking the New Search icon on the Right-Hand Toolbar. The Search Letters page allows you to search using the following fields:

You can also use Search Options to refine your search further.

Keyword

You can use the Keyword field to search for any word or phrase contained within a document. To enter terms into the search box:

For example:
Keyword: Fieber
Keyword: Frankfurter Zeitung

When searching in the Keyword field, you can use truncation to retrieve documents containing variations on a term. If you choose to search for more than one term, you can also combine them using Boolean and proximity searching.

Sender

You can use the Sender field to search for the author of a letter. To enter items into the search box:

For example:
Sender: Reinhart, Johann Christian

Note that senders are listed in the browse index under their full names. For example, Charlotte Schiller appears as "Schiller, Louise Antoinette Charlotte, geb. von Lengefeld".

When searching in the Sender field, you can use truncation to retrieve documents containing variations on a term. If you choose to search for more than one term, you can also combine them using Boolean and proximity searching.

Recipient

You can use the Recipient field to search for the recipient of a letter. To enter items into the search box:

For example:
Recipient: Dacheröden, Caroline von

Note that recipients are listed in the browse index under their full names. For example, Charlotte Schiller appears as "Schiller, Louise Antoinette Charlotte, geb. von Lengefeld".

Date of Correspondence

Using the Date of Correspondence search fields, you can limit a search to letters sent on a particular date or within a range of dates. The default values appearing in the search boxes encompass the whole range of Schiller's letters.

To enter dates into the Date of Correspondence fields:

To restrict your search to a single date, type the same date into the 'From' and 'to' boxes.
